Sri Jnanakshi Rajarajeshwari Temple
Rajarajeshwari Temple Road, Bengaluru, Karnataka, 560098
This colorful temple was built in the early 1960s after holy man Sri Tiruchi Swamiji had a vision of the goddesses Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati flying as sacred eagles over the land where the temple now stands. It has since become one of the most important Hindu temples in Bangalore.
The basics
This towering temple in the southern reaches of Bangalore is a sacred place of worship for devout Hindus, and a remarkable example of Dravidian architecture, despite its young age. The colorful interiors are always worth seeing, but if you come when it's open to the public, you'll see much more, including a six-foot tall statue of goddess Tripura Sundari, also known as Rajeshwari.
Things to know before you go
Be prepared for crowds no matter when you visit.
As per local custom, visitors must leave their shoes outside the temple.
Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, out of respect for local traditions.
Entry is free, but you may wish to leave a small cash donation in one of the collection boxes.
Travelers with limited mobility may need assistance accessing parts of the temple.
How to get there
Sri Jnanakshi Rajarajeshwari Temple is in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, in southern Bangalore. The easiest way to get there is by taxi, but the journey from the city center can take well over 30 minutes when there's traffic. By metro, you can take the Purple Line to the Jnanabharathi or Rajarajeshwari Nagar stations and then take an autorickshaw the remainder of the way.
When to get there
The temple opens for roughly 90 minutes in the mornings and evenings, with extended hours during certain Hindu holidays. Check the temple website or call ahead of timer to confirm up-to-date hours. Because the temple can get crowded, it’s a good idea to arrive at opening.
Dravidian architecture and gopurams
Sometimes referred to as South Indian temple-style architecture, Dravidian architecture sets apart South Indian temples from those found elsewhere in the country. The most noticeable feature of Dravidian temples is the gopuram, a massive entry roof that's usually completely adorned with colorful sculptures depicting scenes from Indian mythology. The gopuram atop Sri Rajarajeshwari Temple can be spotted from many blocks away.
