St. David's Cathedral
23 Murray St., Hobart, Tasmania, 7000
Among central Hobart's most recognizable buildings, St. David's Cathedral is a towering Anglican church. It was built in 1868 on a site where previous churches stood (and were subsequently destroyed by windstorms). The church’s neo-Gothic architecture and large organ are among its major draws.
The basics
St. David's Cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Tasmania. Its services remain popular among devout Hobartians, and it’s also a great place to check out the neo-Gothic architecture or listen to an organ or choral concert. St. David’s Cathedral features on some traditionally guided Hobart tours and self-guided audio tours that allow you to learn about the city at your own pace.
Things to know before you go
St. David's Cathedral is a must-visit for architecture fans, and its concerts are worth attending if you're interested in acoustics.
St. David’s Cathedral is wheelchair-accessible.
Taking photos or walking around during services is not appropriate.
How to get there
St. David's Cathedral is located in the heart of Hobart's Central Business District, a block from Franklin Square and less than a 10-minute walk from the Hobart Waterfront. It's easy to get to on foot if you're staying somewhere central, and there's a parking lot at Trafalgar Place, about a 2-minute walk from the church. Numerous bus stops are nearby, primarily on Elizabeth Street and Macquarie Street.
When to get there
St. David's Cathedral holds morning prayers on weekdays, two services on Sunday mornings, and evening prayers on Sunday evenings, with additional services on select holidays. The church also hosts musical events throughout the year, ranging from choral performances to brass band concerts. Check the website for the latest event details.
John Lee Archer’s Hobart
If you're interested in architecture, it's also worth visiting some of the many structures around the city designed by John Lee Archer. Some of the more impressive buildings include Parliament House, a Georgian-style government building constructed from local sandstone, and St. George's Anglican church, situated on a hilltop overlooking the city.
