St. George's Basilica (Bazilika Sv. Jirí)
Prague, Czech Republic, 119 08
Dating back to the 10th century, St. George's Basilica (Bazilika Sv. Jirí) is the oldest church within the Prague Castle complex; its Gothic interior and Baroque facade are two of the city’s architectural gems. The church today houses the National Gallery’s 19th-century Bohemian Art Collection and often hosts classical music concerts.
The basics
St. George's Basilica is a highlight of Prague Castle tours, along with the Cathedral of St. Vitus, the Old Royal Palace, and Golden Lane. Visit with a private guide or a small group to learn about how the church was founded by Prince Vratislav of Bohemia in 920. Take in the Gothic-style chapel that holds the tomb of Saint Ludmila of Bohemia; the shrines of Vratislav and Boleslaus II; and admire the decorative windows, intricate paintwork of the altar, and dome frescos.
Things to know before you go
You have to buy a Prague Castle-Circuit ticket to visit St. George’s Basilica and the other castle highlights; most tours include the price of the ticket.
Prague Castle tours including St. George’s Basilica require a bit of walking, so choose comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.
The basilica is an active place of worship; clothing covering shoulders and knees is recommended.
Due to stairs at the entrance, the interiors of the church are not accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
How to get there
St. George’s Basilica is located inside the Prague Castle complex, and can be reached via metro Line A (get off at the Malostranska station) to tram 22 (get off at Prazsky hrad or Pohorelec). Alternatively, walk from Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) and over Charles Bridge (Karlův most), keeping in mind that it's a steep uphill climb to the castle gates.
When to get there
Prague’s castle complex is the city’s most important and popular attraction, so it can get very crowded in midday. Time your visit for the early morning or late afternoon to visit St George’s Basilica and the castle’s other highlights with fewer crowds. Much of the complex is outdoors, so clear, mild days are best for enjoying the castle.
What to see in Prague’s castle
Prague’s castle isn’t a single building, but a large fortified area that encompasses a number of the city’s top sights. The Saint Vitus Cathedral is the most famous, with its Gothic towers and magnificent interiors, followed by the colorful Baroque gem of St. George’s Basilica. In addition, the Old Royal Palace and Royal Gardens, Lobkowicz Palace, Dalibor Tower, and Golden Lane are all worth a visit.
