Step into the Void (Aiguille du Midi Skywalk)

Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 74400

The Step into the Void (Aiguille du Midi Skywalk)is a glass room suspended 12,604 feet (3,842 meters) high on the summit of Aiguille du Midi mountain. Reinforced by strong steel and set on the edge of a steep cliff, the transparent box offers unobstructed views of Europe’s highest peaks, with nothing but air below.

The Basics

The Step into the Void is part of a larger mountaintop observatory. Take the cable car to the summit for panoramic views of Bossons Glacier, Chamonix Valley, and the Swiss, French, and Italian Alps. Aiguille du Midi is a peak in the Mont Blanc massif, and the skywalk is the closest you can get to Mont Blanc without hiking or climbing. Day trips to the attraction typically leave from Geneva and include round-trip transportation, allowing you to enjoy a picturesque drive through the mountains.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Step into the Void is a must for first-time visitors to Chamonix.

  • Pack warm clothing and extra layers—parts of the observatory are outdoors, and temperatures can be cold high up in the mountains.

  • Don’t forget sunglasses; sun reflecting off snow can be blinding.

  • A cafeteria and souvenir shop are located nearby at the summit.

How to Get There

The Aiguille du Midi cable car from Chamonix is the only way to arrive at the skywalk. The cable car terminal is located in the south end of town, within walking distance of the village center. This cable car is not for the faint of heart; it currently holds the world record for most vertical ascent by lift at 9,209 feet (2,807 meters).

When to Get There

The Step into the Void is open whenever the cable car is running—year-round except for an annual maintenance period in November, and during poor weather conditions. This attraction is very popular, so take an early lift from Chamonix during the high summer season to avoid long wait times on the mountain.

Must-See Attractions at Aiguille du Midi

The dramatic views of Mont Blanc and the Chamonix Valley are worth the cable car trip, and you’ll find a host of activities to keep you busy on the mountain. Enjoy an exhibit on the history of alpinism, learn about the effects of altitude sickness, and view the inner workings of the cable car system. Aiguille du Midi is also an access point for ski touring, mountaineering, and paragliding adventures.
