Stirling Falls
Fiordland & Milford Sound, New Zealand
Stirling Falls, called Waimanu Falls in Te Reo Māori, is a 495-foot (151-meter) high waterfall in Milford Sound. When it rains—which it often does in Fiordland National Park, the wettest place in New Zealand—many temporary waterfalls gush from the mountains, but Stirling Falls is a permanent feature of the landscape. It’s usually seen from cruises on Milford Sound.
The basics
Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist destinations, and travelers typically visit on a day trip from Te Anau or Queenstown. Whatever the weather, the forest-covered mountains and waterfalls of Milford Sound are a beautiful sight, and Stirling Falls is one of the highlights. As well as typical sightseeing cruises, travelers can kayak to the falls or take a scenic flight above Milford Sound to see Stirling Falls from another angle.
Things to know before you go
Some cruises get very close to the falls, which means you might get wet if you go out on deck—it’s all part of the fun.
There’s no road or hiking trail to Stirling Falls.
Look out for dolphins while cruising to the falls, as they’re a common sight.
How to get there
Travelers typically drive or take a guided tour from Te Anau or Queenstown to Milford Sound, where they hop on a cruise to see Stirling Falls and other natural attractions and views. The falls can be seen on the left-hand side of the vessel about 20 minutes into the cruise, and commentary will tell you about them.
When to get there
Milford Sound is a popular year-round destination, but it is especially sought-after in summer. Expect rain at any time of year. Milford Sound’s waterfalls can be even more impressive during or after rain, although you probably won’t get that postcard view of Mitre Peak in wet weather. Snow and ice on the road to Milford Sound can make winter travel more challenging but not impossible.
Waterfalls on the Milford Road
The road between Te Anau and Milford Sound (State Highway 94) is an attraction in its own right, with many great places to stop and admire the views, including more waterfalls. Whether you’re self-driving or on a guided tour, you may stop at Christie Falls, a 49-foot (15-meter) cascade fall visible from the parking lot; the Hundred Falls cliff of waterfalls on the western end of the Homer Tunnel; and The Chasm, rock formations on the Cleddau River.
