POINT OF INTEREST

Stirling Range National Park

8580 Chester Pass Road, Western Australia, Western Australia, 6338

With rugged mountains and wildflower-covered valleys, Stirling Range National Park in the southwestern corner of Western Australia draws hikers, climbers, and campers. Located in a region with no shortage of national parks, this one is known for being home to one of the tallest peaks in the state.

The basics

A nearly 5-hour drive from Perth, Stirling Range National Park is a bit too far for a day trip, but multiday tours provide a more relaxed itinerary to visit the park and other attractions around Margaret River, Albany, and Esperance. Or, rent your own car or camper van for a road trip through the state’s southwestern coastal area.

In the park, the ultimate challenge for hikers is climbing the 3,600-foot-tall (1,095-meter) peak of Bluff Knoll. Several other bushwalks are also available, but if you’re not into hiking, which mostly involves steep trails, you can still enjoy the Stirling Range Drive, a vehicular route that winds through the park and passes lookout points and landmarks such as Red Gum Spring and White Gum Flat. Wildlife sightings in the park may include kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and birds such as black cockatoos.

Things to know before you go

  • Stirling Range National Park is ideal for serious hikers and those looking to get off the beaten path.
  • Nearly all park trails are steep with uneven surfaces, so wear sturdy shoes.
  • Make sure you have plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection.
  • The mountains are known for quick weather changes, so be prepared for sudden rain or cooler temperatures.

How to get there

Stirling Range National Park is 235 miles (382 kilometers) southeast of Perth via State Route 30 and 60 miles (95 kilometers) north of Albany.

When to get there

The park is open daily but spring and early summer are the best time to admire the wildflowers. Winter can be rainy and cold.

Wildflowers

The park is renowned for its array of wildflowers, with more than 1,000 varieties, many of which can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Examples include banksia, mountain bells, and orchids.
