Stonyridge Vineyard
80 Onetangi Road, Waiheke Island, Auckland, 1971
In a country famous for sauvignon blanc, Waiheke Island’s Stonyridge Vineyard is highly regarded for its Bordeaux-style cabernet reds. The vineyard follows French winemaking techniques to create wines that are unusual for New Zealand and on par with varieties produced in France. You can sample wines and enjoy Stonyridge’s Veranda Cafe.
The basics
Stonyridge Vineyard specializes in making cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, malbec, carmenere, and petit verdot wines using traditional techniques. Visitors can sample and purchase wine, and dine at the café amid vines and olive trees. Stonyridge is a popular part of Waiheke Island’s social life, and it puts on various functions and events throughout the year, especially in summer.
Travelers can visit independently while on Waiheke Island, or on guided tours focusing on food and wine. Hop-on hop-off tours of Waiheke also often include a stop at Stonyridge.

How to get there
Waiheke is a 30- to 60-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland, or a short charter flight away. It’s a popular day trip or overnight destination. Many Waiheke residents commute to Auckland for work, so passenger ferries run regularly, and there are also some vehicle ferries. To reach Stonyridge from the ferry terminal, take a bus, taxi, or guided tour, or rent a car for your time on Waiheke.
When to get there
The café at Stonyridge is open for wine tastings and meals seven days a week, from 11:30am. Saturday evening DJ sessions are often held. Waiheke Island is a popular summer destination, especially in the school vacation between late Dec. and late Jan. If visiting at that time, book your accommodation well ahead of time.
Waiheke Honey Centre
Waiheke Island is a haven of fresh food production. For a sweet taste of the area, head to Waiheke Honey Centre to try locally made honey. The honey and honey-related products (such as soap and candles) produced by this family-run business are organic. The center is located in Oneroa, the largest settlement on Waiheke.
