Storyhouse
Hunter St, Chester, England
Storyhouse is Chester’s modern cultural center, which encompasses a theater, cinema, restaurant, bars, and a library, along with open-air space for events. Housed inside a renovated art deco cinema building from the 1930s, the venue opened in 2017 and is a popular site for families, culture lovers, students, and tourists alike. You can find it in the heart of Chester city center.
The basics
While Storyhouse is a city hub for most art and cultural events, the site doesn’t feature on many Chester walking tours or guided experiences. However, if you’re looking for plays, shows, or films, there’s a good chance you’ll end up with tickets for a performance here. Alternatively, the well-stocked library is a great space for calm reading or rainy-day fun with the kids.
Things to know before you go
The entire Storyhouse building is wheelchair-accessible, with elevators to every floor.
There are on-site restrooms including baby-changing facilities and wheelchair-accessible restrooms.
The Kitchen restaurant is open daily from breakfast through to early evening; booking is recommended.
How to get there
Storyhouse is on Hunter Street in the center of town, close to popular points of interest such as Chester Cathedral and the New Chester Market. If you’re driving, just be aware that most of the nearby streets are pedestrianized; you’ll find paid parking lots at New Market Parking and Delamere Street.
When to get there
Storyhouse site is open daily year-round, from morning until late night. The only exception is Christmas Day, when it is closed, and other key holiday dates when there are reduced opening hours; check directly with the site if you plan to visit around holiday seasons.
Open-Air Events at the Storyhouse
Keep an eye out for Storyhouse’s open-air events if you’re visiting Chester in the summer. Hosted in nearby Grosvenor Park, Moonlight Flicks are a series of outdoor cinema screenings complete with deckchairs, headphones, pizza, and cocktails. There are also productions staged at the Grosvenor Park Open-Air Theater.
