Strossmayer Promenade (Strossmayerovo Setaliste)
Strossmayerovo Setaliste, Zagreb, Croatia, 10110
One of Zagreb’s most tranquil and atmospheric walkways, the Strossmayer Promenade (Strossmayerovo Setaliste) is both a popular sightseeing destination among tourists and a relaxed hangout spot frequented by locals. The steep and winding route connects the Upper and Lower towns, offering some of the most panoramic views of the city.
The Basics
Referred to by some as the “Croatian Montmartre,” the hilltop Strossmayer Promenade shares the former’s verticality, picturesque vistas, and romantic ambiance. Named for the Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the walkway runs along the remains of Zagreb’s medieval, defensive walls. The promenade is shaded by chestnut trees and, in the evening, lit by golden lanterns. In the summer months it hosts open-air festivals and markets, where souvenir vendors, artists, street-food cooks, and musicians set up shop.
Given its proximity to the landmarks of the Upper Town (including highlights such as St. Mark’s Church), the Strossmayer Promenade features on various walking tours and sightseeing itineraries. It’s also an accessible site to discover independently.
Things to Know Before You Go
Due to its steep incline, the Strossmayer Promenade is not readily accessible to visitors with limited mobility.
The promenade has benches and telescopes, should you wish to relax and soak up the sweeping cityscape below.
One of the Strossmayer Promenade’s highlights is a sculpture of modernist Croatian writer Antun Gustav Matoš, which visitors can sit next to and pose with.
How to Get There
The Strossmayer Promenade connects the Upper and Lower towns and is best discovered on foot. For those wishing to avoid a strenuous, uphill journey, the Zagreb funicular—among the world’s shortest funiculars—offers a more accessible way to reach it.
When to Get There
While the Strossmayer Promenade is a picturesque destination throughout the year, it is at its liveliest in the summer months, when resident street fairs are hosted on-site. Come to browse different vendors, sample snacks, and enjoy musical performances. During the lead-up to Christmas, it also hosts advent-themed decorations, shopping stalls, and shows.
The Lotrščak Tower Cannon
If you’re visiting the Strossmayer Promenade close to midday, don’t let a sudden boom catch you off-guard. Lotrščak Tower—one of the area’s oldest and most renowned landmarks—fires a ceremonial cannon each day at noon.
