Sun Picture Gardens Cinema
8 Carnarvon St., Broome, Western Australia, 6725
The world’s oldest, still-operating open-air movie theater, Sun Pictures is a major tourist attraction in Broome, Australia. Both locals and travelers visit the picture gardens, where you can relax in a deck chair under the stars and enjoy the latest movies in a historic ambiance.
The basics
An evening at the movies here feels like stepping back in time. Bright marquee lights spelling out “Sun Pictures” liven up the double-fronted tin structure while vintage movie posters and projectors are on display inside. First opened in 1916, the theater’s seating remains true to the original layout, with canvas deck chairs set out under the stars and some under the verandah. There is a grassy area right in front of the screen if you wish to take a blanket to sit on. Tours of Broome that pass through Chinatown typically stop at Sun Pictures. During the winter months, the cinema offers self-guided audio tours.
Things to know before you go
The theater has a small kiosk that sells snacks and alcoholic beverages.
Mosquitoes and sandflies are present in the theater. It’s a good idea to cover your skin and wear insect repellent, which the theater offers free of charge.
The theater is near the Broome International Airport; be prepared to hear planes as they ascend or descend overhead throughout the evening.
How to get there
Sun Pictures is located on Carnarvon Street in Broome’s Chinatown district. Attractions within a short strolling distance include the Roebuck Bay Lookout and Streeter’s Jetty. It’s a 3-minute drive (or 15-minute walk) from Broome International Airport and a 10-minute drive (or 1-hour walk) from Cable Beach. Chinatown is served by the Broome Explorer Bus, which connects popular attractions around town, including Cable Beach and Boulevard Shops.
When to get there

Things to do in Chinatown, Broome
While in Chinatown, it’s well worth taking the time to explore this historic district. The center of Broome’s pearling industry in the 19th and 20th centuries, Chinatown is filled with pearl shops you can pop into. Or, wander around and marvel at the public art and fine examples of Chinese architecture. When you get hungry, you’ll find some of Broome’s most delicious restaurants here.
