Surfers Paradise Beach
Surfers Paradise, Australia
Internationally popular Surfers Paradise Beach has something for all beachgoers—surfable breaks, plenty of room to lay out a towel and sunbathe, and lots of people-watching, too. In the evening there’s a vibrant nightlife scene, so if you’d like to raise a glass after a day at the beach, this is your place.
The basics
Slip, slop, slap on your sun protection, as the Aussies say, when you head out to Surfers Paradise Beach. This long stretch of sand is an excellent, and iconic, spot to spend a day or longer. It’s perfect for surfers—but mostly for beginners, since there are better breaks in Australia—and there are plenty of cafés and bars to keep you refreshed. If you want to get off the beach, consider hiking to the Skypoint Observation deck for awesome views of the Gold Coast.
Things to know before you go
Make sure to pack sunscreen and consider wearing a rash guard, since the Aussie sunshine is strong.
Learn to surf with a lesson from one of the established surf schools along the beach.
Check when the evening markets are happening each week, and time your visit with one of those.
How to get there
Australia is pretty good with public transportation, so getting to Surfers Paradise Beach isn’t difficult. There’s the number 777 bus that runs from the Gold Coast Airport to Broadbeach, and then you can hop on the tram to Cavill Avenue Station. If you get lost, everyone will know how to get to Surfers Paradise, so just ask a local.
When to get there
Summer is peak season at Surfers Paradise Beach, so aim for December and January for the warmest weather. You won’t be the only one at the beach during these months, though, so if you want fewer crowds, go in the fall or spring. It’s sunny around 300 days a year, so there are plenty of great days to visit.
Gold Coast whale-watching
If you come to the Gold Coast in the winter or spring months from June to October, you’re in for a treat, as huge humpback whales pass Surfers Paradise Beach on their yearly migration. Take a tour, and your captain can steer you to the best areas for whale-watching. Listen for their incredible songs, too.
