Swartberg Pass
Western Cape, South Africa
Cutting through the towering Swartberg mountain range, the Swartberg Pass climbs steeply through a set of hairpin turns, which display the vibrant color of the rocks. Construction of the pass began in 1881 but wasn't finished until 1888. Today, it’s known for its dramatic vistas and as the access point for the Gamkaskloof—a remote valley that makes up part of the Swartberg Nature Reserve.
The basics
Swartberg Pass is located in South Africa’s Western Cape and is a favorite destination for those traveling on the Garden Route. Typically, visitors drive through the pass to admire the scenery, but if you’re looking for a challenge, you might take on the pass on a mountain bike. Tours often run through the pass at sunset, so you can appreciate how the light hits the ruddy mountains and quartzite cliffs. The region has a stark, arid beauty and plenty of options for hikers and nature lovers.
Things to know before you go
Check the weather before you go—the pass is not paved, and the rain can make the road slippery and dangerous.
You can drive the pass without 4WD, but make sure the forecast is clear, and it’s been dry for a while.
Drive carefully in cars with low ground clearance, as there are rocky sections.
Download a map before entering the past, as reception can be spotty.
How to get there
The nearest city is George, along the coastal Garden Route. From George, drive north along the N12 to Oudtshoorn before turning onto the R328. Continue until you reach Wilgewandel Holiday Farm & Restaurant, after which you’ll find a fork in the road. Take the left fork, and keep driving. After about 8 miles, the road turns to gravel, marking the southern entrance to the pass. From George, it takes about 1.5 hours to reach the entrance.
When to get there
March is one of the best months for those traveling in the Western Cape—fall brings cooler weather and dryer conditions, which is perfect if you want to bike the pass. The pass takes about an hour to drive through, not including stops. Set out in the morning from George to head through the mountains and arrive in the town of Prince Albert at the northern end of the pass.
Off the beaten track
The remote valley of Gamkaskloof (also called Die Hel) can be accessed via a steep road down from the pass (4WD only). There, you’ll find a handful of residents and a rustic farm guesthouse. The nearby nature reserve is a favorite destination for hikers and mountain bikers, while its greenery and fruit orchards contrast with the arid mountain range.
