POINT OF INTEREST

Tahune Forest AirWalk

Tahune Forest Reserve, Hobart, Tasmania, 7116

High above the forest and Huon River, visitors walk across the Tahune Forest AirWalk, a metal platform suspended in the air. The wind rustles the treetops, and birds chirp around this canopy walkway in the Huon Valley. The Huon and Picton Rivers meet below, and trails and suspension bridges create walking circuits.

The basics

Climbing the stairs to the Tahune Forest AirWalk and walking on its cantilevered section is the main draw of this treetop attraction. Visitors can also explore two forest walks along local riverbanks and across swinging bridges. Allow around an hour to experience the AirWalk, plus more time to walk along the river or try the cable-guided Eagle Hang Glider. Both individual tourists and tours from Hobart usually combine Tahune Forest AirWalk with Hastings Caves State Reserve.

Things to know before you go

  • Tickets to the Tahune Forest Airwalk are valid for the day and provide access to all the walks.

  • The AirWalk and Huon Pine Walk are accessible for visitors using wheelchairs—ask staff for directions.

  • There are two places to stay in the Tahune Forest Reserve; otherwise, the nearest accommodation is in Geeveston.

  • The Eagle Hang Glider over the Huon River has weight and weather requirements for safe use.

How to get there

To visit the Tahune Forest AirWalk, you’ll need to travel to the Huon Valley southwest of Hobart. The drive takes roughly 1.5 hours and involves driving via Huonville and Geeveston. Its remote location means going via public transport is not an option. You'll either need to take a tour from Hobart or drive yourself.

When to get there

The Tahune Forest AirWalk is open daily for regular business hours. It's best to avoid going in winter as you're very exposed to the elements, and the road to the AirWalk can be icy. Summer, especially February and March, is the best time to visit for good weather, even though it's also the attraction's busiest season.

Other places to visit in the Huon Valley

The Huon Valley of southwest Tasmania sits on the edge of the island’s most remote and untouched nature. There are just a few other attractions to visit. One is the Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs, where you can tour Newdegate Cave and relax in local thermal pools. Hartz Mountains National Park can be a fun place for hikers to explore, with trails leading up to Hartz Peak.
