Tamatea/Dusky Sound
Southland, New Zealand
In southwestern New Zealand’s Fiordland National Park, this remote sound remains one of the least modified areas of the mainland. There’s no road access, though cruise ships often pass through, because it’s actually the largest and longest of Fiordland’s sounds. Otherwise, it’s off the main tourist circuit.
The basics
New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) operates an important ecological restoration project at Tamatea/Dusky Sound, and seals, dolphins, and whales can be seen here. Fiordland’s notoriously high rainfall means, in wet weather, many fabulous waterfalls cascade from the sound’s forest-covered mountains.
Nature enthusiasts will love visiting, whether that’s on a boat tour, a scenic flight, or a long-distance hike—the 52-mile (84-kilometer), advanced Dusky Track passes through the sound. Unlike nearby Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound, it’s uncommon to visit Tamatea/Dusky Sound on a day cruise, because it’s less accessible, but some multi-day cruises of Fiordland focus on or sail through it.
Things to know before you go
Accessing Tamatea/Dusky Sound is not a low-budget activity, however you like to travel, so factor that into your plans.
Fiordland receives very high rainfall, so bring wet-weather clothing at any time of year.

How to get there
Tamatea/Dusky Sound cannot be reached by road. Scenic helicopter flights typically start from Te Anau and include Doubtful Sound, too. Luxury multi-day cruises also usually begin with a helicopter transfer from Te Anau. Hikers on the Dusky Track begin at the western side of Lake Manapouri, a boat ride away from Manapouri village, a short drive south of Te Anau; there’s a daily boat service.
When to get there
Fiordland receives extremely high rainfall but the driest time of year is late summer and mid fall (February–April). Nevertheless, you can expect rain at any time, which can obscure views and lower temperatures, but also create impressive waterfalls. To hike the Dusky Track, visit between December and April. Cruises don’t depart year-round, so look into this option well in advance.
Tamatea/Dusky Sound Restoration Project
Tamatea/Dusky Sound is an ecological treasure, thanks to its remoteness and the large number of islands that have never been subjected to invasive species. Many native birds, skinks and geckos, invertebrates, marine animals, and plants thrive here. DOC aims for Tamatea/Dusky Sound to become New Zealand’s largest “bio bank,” a source of endangered species that can be sent to pest-free locations around New Zealand when needed.
