Tangier Kasbah
Pl. de la Kasbah, Tanger, Morocco
Peppered with panels of colorful tile mosaics, Tangier Kasbah is a historic fortress and former royal palace that offers coastal views from the tallest point in the city. The palace, Dar el Makhzen, dates back to the 17th century and is now home to a museum with a peaceful garden, which showcases a range of Moroccan art.
The basics
To reach the Tangier Kasbah, you stroll through the narrow streets of the medina, or the maze-like old town, to climb up steps to the Kasbah. You can admire this landmark from the outside, taking in views of the coastline below without exploring the museum. But art, architecture, and history buffs will find plenty to discover within the museum walls, such as carpets, silks, manuscripts, tombs, and more. Most visitors spend an hour or two exploring, including the palace garden with its marble fountains.
Things to know before you go
The Tangier Kasbah is a must-visit site for families seeking educational experiences and history lovers.
The narrow streets and steps of Tangier present challenges to wheelchairs and strollers, though the museum is accessible for wheelchairs.
Wear flat, comfortable shoes and be prepared for climbing lots of uneven steps; a water bottle and sunscreen will also come in handy.
How to get there
Many visitors to Tangier arrive by ferry. From the port, you can take a taxi or walk up to Tangier Kasbah, though beware that the climb is steep and many steps are required. Public transportation through the narrow streets of the medina is not available; you can either walk to this landmark from your hotel or the port, or get dropped off by taxi at the nearest gate, Bab al Bahr, in the old city walls.
When to get there
Early morning or late afternoon visitors will find fewer crowds and milder temperatures at the Tangier Kasbah. While summer is often considered peak tourist season, anyone hoping to avoid extreme heat and crowds should instead aim to visit in the spring (May or June) or the fall (September and October).
Exploring the Tangier medina
The smell of mint tea and the sight of local crafts—carpets, textiles, and jewelry, to name a few—dominate a stroll through the narrow streets of the old city in Tangier. If you’re short on time, consider joining a tour to make the most of your trip; hiring a guide will help you navigate the cafés, shops, mosaics, lookout points, and more. From artisan workshops to vibrant souks, a stroll through the medina is a stimulating introduction to local culture.
