Thanh Toan Bridge

Thuy Thanh, Hue, Thua Thien Hue, 536100

The ornate, covered Thanh Toan Bridge—Cau Ngoi to locals—humbly crosses a canal in Thuy Thanh, a rural village about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from Hue. If you love Hoi An’s famous Japanese covered bridge, you’ll love Thanh Toan: Built in the 18th century in both Japanese and Chinese styles, it’s got all of the pomp and circumstance of Hoi An’s, but without the crowds.

The basics

Only two bridges in central Vietnam preserve the beloved “house above bridge” style: Hoi An’s Japanese Covered Bridge and Thanh Toan. This architectural gem is decked out with glazed roof tiles, seven compartments (one for worship), ceramic dragons, pearl inlays, traditional Chinese inscriptions, and even “resting” and “walking” lanes. It’s designed for enjoyment, not just crossing the water. For all that opulence, it’s just 55 feet (17 meters) long.

Things to know before you go

  • A nearby traditional market and agricultural museum make this a nice stop to experience the life of sleepier Thanh Toan.

  • If you need directions, ask about Cau Ngoi, the local name for this bridge.

  • Though detail will be harder to see, come at night to see the bridge lit up.

How to get there

Thanh Toan Bridge is about 10 minutes east of Hue. You could hail a taxi or xe om (motorbike taxi), or drive out there yourself if you have access to a motorbike. Simply get on DT-1 and take it east, out of the city. You’ll eventually run into the village of Thanh Toan, and when you get to the water, the bridge is on a small canal to your right.

When to get there

If you want to squeeze in a market visit, come in the morning—Thanh Toan’s market is more traditional than most markets in Hue. Otherwise, the only “bad” time to visit Thanh Toan Bridge is during Tet (Lunar New Year), when locals are busy celebrating the holiday. Seeing daily life here is part of the appeal.

Discover Hue’s history

The oldest bridge in Hue, Thanh Toan Bridge is definitely best experienced with a guide—or a local—who can help uncover the meaning behind the bridge’s nooks, ornate tilework, and creation. If you’re on your own, definitely stop by the next-door museum to get a self-guided look at this little corner of Vietnam.
