The Long Walk

The Long Walk Rd, Windsor, England

Commissioned by King Charles II in the 1700s, The Long Walk stretches almost 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from Windsor Castle to Windsor Great Park. Lined with chestnut trees and visited by grazing deer, the avenue offers stunning views of the castle and the Copper Horse statue of King George III. It’s also a popular destination for families, joggers, and history enthusiasts.

The basics

Visitors can experience The Long Walk during a range of different Windsor tours—these can be half- or full-day excursions, and they typically depart from London. Some tours solely provide transport to and from Windsor Castle, with free time to explore the grounds and nearby surroundings at your own pace. It’s also possible to go on a self-guided walking tour to learn the history of the Long Walk and other Windsor highlights, while taking as many photo breaks as you want along the way.

When to get there

The park is open year-round with free entry for visitors from dawn until dusk, offering ample opportunities for exploration. The busiest times are weekends during the summer months of the year.

Walking through the Deer Park

As you stroll along the Long Walk, you'll eventually find yourself in the Deer Park, a remnant of the ancient Norman hunting grounds. Here, approximately 500 wild deer roam freely, offering visitors a unique wildlife encounter. Note that it’s crucial to adhere to a few guidelines while exploring this natural habitat: Be sure to maintain a respectful distance from the deer to ensure they don’t get startled, and keep dogs on leashes at all times.
