The Nizam’s Museum
Purani Haveli, Pathar Gatti, Hyderabad, Telangana, 500002
Occupying part of Hyderabad's 18th-century Purani Haveli, The Nizam's Museum is chock-full of artifacts from the Nizams, former rulers of Hyderabad. Here, you can learn about the opulent lives of the men who once ruled over the city and its surroundings as you check out paintings, model airplanes, costumes, weaponry, and lots of gold.
The basics
Museum highlights include a tiffin box made of gold, intricately engraved daggers and swords, a crystal hookah, and a jewel-encrusted perfume box. There's also a massive walk-in wardrobe filled with 19th-century regal attire. Many Hyderabad tours stop at the museum and most private, custom tours will give you the option to visit. If you’re particularly interested in art and history, opt for a tour that focuses specifically on Hyderabad's museums.
Things to know before you go
The Nizam’s Museum is a must-see for history, architecture, or interior design fans.
The museum is called the Silver Jubilee Museum or the Purani Haveli Museum.
There’s a fee to enter the museum, with discounted admission available for children. There’s an extra cost for video and still cameras, including mobile phones.
The museum is up a flight of stairs and isn’t wheelchair accessible.
How to get there
The Nizam's Museum is inside the Purani Haveli complex in Hyderabad's Zehra Nagar Colony. It's about a 5-minute taxi or auto rickshaw ride from the Salar Jung Museum and a 10-minute drive from Charminar. While it's easiest to get to by taxi, autorickshaw, or on a guided tour that includes transportation, you can also get there by taking the train to the Dabirpura railway station and then walking the rest of the way.
When to get there
The Nizam's Museum is open every day of the week except for Friday and some holidays. Arrive at least half an hour before closing to be allowed in. While the museum is a year-round attraction, Hyderabad as a destination is at its most pleasant during the cooler, dryer season, which runs from late October through the middle of March.
Visiting the Salar Jung Museum
A few minutes' drive from The Nizam's Museum is the Salar Jung Museum, one of Hyderabad's best-known museums. Artifacts from around the world are spread across 39 galleries. Highlights include a copy of Giovanni Maria Benzoni's Veiled Rebecca and a wooden double statue titled Mephistopheles and Margaretta, which depicts two characters—one on the back of the statue and one on the front.
