Treasure Hill
No. 2, Alley 14, Lane, 230 Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng, Taipei, Taiwan, 100
A former illegal settlement and one of Taipei’s oldest historical neighborhoods, Treasure Hill got a major facelift in 2010, transforming it into a living artists’ village. Today the area contains performance spaces, galleries, and shops, all squeezed together along the narrow alleys and stairways of this hillside community.
The Basics
Most international visitors to Taipei never make it to Treasure Hill, which is a shame. Visitors are free to wander through the village and pop in to the open studios to see completed works and works in progress. From time to time, Treasure Hill also hosts exhibitions, workshops, and other educational programs. A centuries-old Buddhist temple dedicated to the goddess Guanyin stands on the hillside and is worth a visit for those in the neighborhood.
Things to Know Before You Go
Treasure Hill is a must-visit for art lovers and those looking to get off the beaten path.
Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to climb; the neighborhood has lots of stairs and steep paths.
Don’t forget to bring sun protection and plenty of water; it can get hot in the summer months.
How to Get There
To reach Treasure Hill, take the metro’s Green Line to Gongguan Station and leave through exit 1. It’s about a 5-minute walk to the artists’ village from the station. You can also take one of several public buses to the Gongguan Station stop.
When to Get There
The Treasure Hill neighborhood is always open, but most of the public spaces and galleries maintain regular business hours Tuesdays through Sundays. Plan to visit on the weekend, when more studios and galleries will be open.
Community-Development Projects
Treasure Hill’s artists-in-residence program provides 14 studios for 3- to 6-month residencies for local and international artists, with the aim of fostering community participation in the arts. The neighborhood also maintains a Traveler’s Hostel and participates in historical-community-preservation work.
