Tunnel Creek

Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) National Park, Broome, Western Australia, 6728

Go underground at Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) National Park in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. Compared to other national parks in the area, Dimalurru is small, covering just 225 acres (91 hectares) of the Napier Mountain Range. But it has a popular main attraction: Western Australia’s oldest cave system.

The basics

Visitors can explore the cave through which the Tunnel Creek flows, wading through freshwater pools and passing large stalactites—and sometimes bats, olive pythons, and crocodiles—from one side of the Napier Range to the other. Cultural tours usually focus on the indigenous Bunuba people, as the caves hold special significance in their culture. Multi-day guided tours of the Kimberley region departing from Broome typically stop here on their way to Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge).

Things to know before you go

  • A flashlight is essential for exploring the caves.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes and prepare to get wet—the water can reach above the knees.

  • The national park has few facilities beyond a small parking area, an information shelter, and a bush toilet. It closes during the evening.

  • Respect any Aboriginal paintings you may come across by not touching them.

How to get there

Dimalurru is around 70 miles (110 kilometers) northwest of Fitzroy Crossing and around 23 miles (35 kilometers) southeast of Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park. Access is by unpaved roads and requires 4WD vehicles. Conditions vary greatly and can change, with roads often closed from November to April.

When to get there

The national park opens to the public at the end of the wet season, usually early April, depending on the weather and road conditions. Late The dry season from April to late November offers the most favorable visiting conditions, with clear warm days and cool nights.

Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park

Also part of the Napier Range, Windjana Gorge has walls soaring 328 feet (100 meters) above the Lennard River. Among Western Australia's most dramatic gorges, Windjana is home to a large population of saltwater crocodiles. The National Park has a walk-in campsite and is open during the dry season only.
