Ulsanbawi Rock
Seorak-dong, Sokcho, South Korea
Towering over the UNESCO-listed landscapes of Seoraksan National Park, Ulsanbawi Rock is a jagged granite peak that offers panoramic views from its perch 266 meters (873 meters) above sea level. The 2-hour hike to the top might be strenuous, but it’s worth it for vistas of otherworldly rock formations, ancient temples, and thick forests.
The basics
From the Seoraksan National Park entrance, the hike to the summit of Ulsanbawi Rock is 2.6 miles (4.3 kilometers); it’s a steep climb that’s often compared to the ultimate Stairmaster challenge, so come prepared. Hiking tours of the national park—which typically depart from Seoul or Sokcho—always at least stop to admire Ulsanbawi Rock, while some guide you to the top during a trek. Multi-day tours typically combine it with nearby highlights such as Nami Island and Naksansa Temple.
Things to know before you go
Wear sturdy hiking shoes with a good grip and take a waterproof jacket to put on at the top, as it can feel cold.
There’s an entrance fee of US$3.50 to enter Seoraksan National Park, with a discount for children.
Several cafés and restaurants serving hot drinks and food are within the park, as well as a few vending machines. Prices are much higher than in nearby Sokcho.
How to get there
Seoraksan National Park is only 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the city of Sokcho, which serves as a convenient base for exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site. From there, you can take the number 7 bus all the way to the park; the journey takes around an hour and drops you at the entrance.
When to get there
Seoraksan National Park is open daily from early morning until evening. The best times to visit are in the fall to admire the fiery-colored foliage or in spring when cherry blossoms bloom. During winter, winds can get strong, so the cable car and hiking trails can close without much warning.
How to visit Gwongeumseong Fortress
Also in Seoraksan National Park is Gwongeumseong Fortress, the ruins of a stone castle that hovers 2,624 feet (800 meters) above sea level. Unlike Ulsanbawi Rock, you don’t have to break a sweat to enjoy the views; you can take the Seoraksan Cable Car right to the top. Adult tickets are 15,000 won for a round-trip with lower pricing for children.
