Uppsala Cathedral (Uppsala Domkyrka)
Domkyrkoplan, Uppsala, Central Sweden, 753 10
Uppsala Cathedral, notable for its towering spires, is one of the Nordic countries' tallest cathedrals. Originally built for Roman Catholic coronations, it's also the resting place of important historical figures, including King Gustav Vasa of Sweden. Visitors flock here to see its Treasury museum, home to a magnificent collection of medieval church fabrics.
The basics
Travelers typically come to Uppsala Cathedral on day tours that cover the highlights of Uppsala and the Swedish countryside, such as the Gamla Uppsala ancient Viking burial site. For more flexible itinerary options, choose a private tour. Many of these tours begin in central Stockholm and include private transportation. However, you can start in Uppsala and take a guided walking tour to learn about its key sights and history.
Things to know before you go
The Treasury isn’t wheelchair- or stroller-accessible due to its challenging emergency exits.
Those exploring independently should pick up guide leaflets available outside the cathedral shop in multiple languages, including English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
There is an on-site cathedral café, where there are restrooms.
There is typically no admission fee to enter the cathedral.
How to get there
Uppsala Cathedral is between the Fyris River in Uppsala’s center and the University Hall of Uppsala University. Getting there on foot is easy; it's about an 11-minute stroll from Uppsala Central Station to the cathedral. Alternatively, you can get the No. 1 bus from the station to Uppsala Tradgardsgatan, which takes six minutes, and then take a 2-minute walk to the cathedral.
When to get there
The cathedral is typically open year-round from morning until early evening; however, access may be restricted for services or concerts. It’s always best to check the events calendar in advance. The cathedral’s main service typically takes place on Sunday late mornings. There are also free summer concerts in June, July, and August.
What to see after Uppsala Cathedral
There are plenty of attractions near Uppsala Cathedral to explore. Don’t miss the 16th-century Uppsala Castle, which is around a 5-minute walk away. Nature lovers can also find the Linnaean Garden, one of Sweden’s oldest botanic gardens, nearby. Other options include a stroll along the Fyris River and visiting the charming cafés in the center for a dose of Swedish fika culture.
