Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
Located in Kyrgyzstan’s Ala-Too mountains, Issyk-Ata Gorge is known for its stunning scenery, thermal baths, and hiking trails. Along with its alpine meadows and natural hot springs, the area is also home to an ancient carving of Buddha etched onto a boulder—a remnant of Buddhism’s popularity in Kyrgyzstan before the arrival of Islam.
The basics
Many people visit Issyk-Ata as a day trip from Bishkek, since the area can be reached by car from the capital in under a couple of hours. Roads are relatively easy to navigate independently, though knowing basic Russian (or Kyrgyz) is helpful. The main draws here are hiking, taking photos, and soaking in the hot springs. Anyone who prefers a more structured approach can opt for a guided tour; full-day itineraries often include a stop at Burana Tower, a Silk Road–era minaret.
Things to know before you go
- Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes with solid ankle support. While hikes vary from easy to challenging, you can expect rugged, uneven terrain. Be careful not to stumble.
- Visitors can find food along the way, but expect limited choices. Consider bringing a packed meal. Take plenty of water and snacks with you, especially if you plan on hiking.
- Never hike alone. If you’re not an experienced hiker and unused to the wilderness, join a tour to have hands-on support from a guide.
- Don’t forget a bathing suit if you plan on taking a dip in the hot springs. There’s also a Soviet-era sanatorium that offers therapeutic treatments.
- Dress in layers, as the weather in the mountains can change without warning. In the summer, bring a hat and sunscreen.
How to get there
From Bishkek, count on around a 90-minute or 2-hour drive to Issyk-Ata. Adventurous travelers can take a marshrutka (shared minibus) from the capital to the nearby town of Kashka-Suu, and then travel to the gorge by taxi. But an easier option is to rent a car and drive yourself, or hire a driver for the day. You can also join an organized tour, many of which include hotel pickup and drop-off in Bishkek.
When to get there
The best weather window is from late spring to early fall, when the days are sunny and rain is at a minimum. Parts of Issyk-Ata can get crowded on the weekends, especially in the summer, but the area is large enough that it’s easy to spread out. If you’d prefer a quieter experience, aim for a weekday.
How to enjoy Kyrgyzstan’s banya culture
The banya, referring to a bathhouse in Russian, is a legacy from the decades that Kyrgyzstan spent under Russian and Soviet rule. Visitors can still find Soviet-era bathhouses scattered around the country, some still offering controversial treatments like radon baths. However, a standard experience features a steam room and hot pool, and typically a cold-water plunge pool. Many bathers also wear felt hats to protect their heads from the heat.
