POINT OF INTEREST

Valley of the Giants

Walpole-Nornalup National Park, Perth, Western Australia, 6333

Part of Walpole-Nornalup National Park, the Valley of the Giants is a forest of towering tingle trees that are unique to this southwestern region of Western Australia. The forest draws visitors with its Tree Top Walk, an elevated walkway that provides bird’s-eye views of the lush landscape.

The basics

The Tree Top Walk rises 130 feet (40 meters) in the air and stretches 1,970 feet long (600 meters), creating as little environmental impact as possible while offering the chance to truly appreciate the height of the trees—some of which are the tallest in the state. On the ground, the Ancient Empire Walk is another series of boardwalks, giving you two ways to explore the forest canopy.   More than four hours from Perth, the Valley of the Giants makes for a possible but very long day trip; multi-day tours offer a more relaxed itinerary to visit the forest and other attractions around Margaret River, Albany, and surrounding destinations.

Things to know before you go

  • The Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk is ideal for nature lovers and families.
  • The Ancient Empire Walk is free; the Tree Top Walk requires an admission fee.
  • A visitor information center and shop are available.
  • Wheelchairs and strollers can be rented and used around the site.

How to get there

Valley of the Giants is located near the town of Walpole, about 270 miles (430 km) south of Perth and 160 miles (260 km) southeast of Margaret River along National Route 1.

When to get there

The site is open daily from mid-morning to early evening. It is busiest during the state’s school holiday periods, which typically take place in January, April, July, and October.

Tingle Trees

Part of the eucalyptus family, the red tingle trees in Valley of the Giants are found nowhere else in the world. Some are up to 400 years old, and they can grow more than 200 feet (60 meters) tall with trunk circumferences of nearly 80 feet (24 meters)—large enough for a few trees to be hollowed out so you can walk through them.
