Via Bottai (Cooper Alley)

Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige

Via Bottai, also known as Cooper Alley, is named after the bottai, or coopers, crafters of casks and barrels, who once plied their trade in an area with deep connections to wine-making and trading going back to the Middle Ages. In the heart of the medieval center, the narrow cobblestone lane is one of Bolzano’s most historic and atmospheric streets, lined with centuries-old buildings and wrought-iron inn signs.

The basics

Walking along Via Bottai is like stepping back in time. The street is characterized by its well-preserved medieval architecture, with arched doorways, wrought-iron signs and balconies, and modernized cobblestone paths that once provided space for three-horse carriages. Linger around the historic center near Piazza Walther—the heart of the city center—and you’ll likely find your way to this street lined with shops, workshops, and restaurants. Walking and food tours of the historic center of Bolzano also typically explore the area.

Things to know before you go

  • Via Bottai is one of the best-preserved medieval streets in Bolzano, offering a glimpse into the city’s past.
  • Via Bottai is part of a pedestrian zone and is closed to traffic.
  • Bring your camera, as the alley’s charming architecture makes it a favorite spot for photographers.
  • Restaurants along Via Bottai offer traditional South Tyrolean dishes, making it an excellent place for a meal.

How to get there

Via Bottai is in Bolzano’s old town, easily accessible on foot from Piazza Walther and other central locations. The street is roughly a 6-minute walk from the central train station via Laurin and dei Grappoli. It's also well-connected by public transportation, including buses that service the historic center and the Waltherplatz bus stop next to the Bolzano Cathedral.

When to get there

The ideal time to visit Via Bottai is during the day when the street's historical details are most visible. Early mornings offer a peaceful experience, while evenings create a romantic ambiance as the street lamps light up the alley. Dining outdoors at one of the alley’s restaurants is especially delightful in the warmer months.

Bolzano’s Italian and German-inspired cuisine

Bolzano is in South Tyrol, Alto Adige in Italian, a semi-autonomous province of Italy where more locals speak German than Italian—and where you can find excellent German and Italian cuisine. For heavily German food near via Dei Bottai, you could try the beer and pork dumplings at Batzen Häusl, which also has outdoor seating. For lighter, German-inspired Italian fare, such as blueberry risotto, try Trattoria Filo d’Olio in Vicolo Della Parrocchia instead.
