Via dei Portici

Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige

Via dei Portici, also called Laubengasse, stretches through the heart of Bolzano’s old town and is among the town’s most famous streets. Named after the arcades (portici in Italian) that house the shops lining the historic streets, Via dei Portici has been Bolzano’s commercial hub since the Middle Ages—today, it blends traditional architecture with modern shops and is the number one shopping destination in town.

The basics

After visiting Bolzano Cathedral and Walther Plaza, you can easily walk to Via dei Portici, which lies just a few minutes north of both attractions on foot. The street's elegant arcades house trendy clothing stores, boutiques, cafes, and a few traditional artisan shops—you can browse at your leisure in about an hour or more or take walking tours through the historic old town that will get you quickly oriented. The street is also home to historic buildings, making it ideal for a shopping-free stroll.

Things to know before you go

  • Via dei Portici is ideal for those interested in shopping, history, and architecture.
  • Look for galleries that hold additional shops off the main street.
  • Find public restrooms on the northeast side of Piazza Walther.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are recommended due to the cobblestone streets.

How to get there

Via dei Portici is located in the center of Bolzano’s old town. The street is roughly a 10-minute walk from the main train station along Viale Della Stazione and Piazza Walther. It's also well-connected by public transportation, including buses that service the historic center and the Waltherplatz bus stop next to the Bolzano Cathedral.

When to get there

Visit Via dei Portici is during the day when shops and cafes are open, allowing you to fully appreciate the street's historic charm. Early mornings offer a peaceful experience, while evenings are better for dining out. From November to January, the street is transformed by the festive atmosphere of the famous Bolzano Christmas market.

Bolzano’s vintage pharmacies

Via dei Portici is home to high-end shopping and two ancient pharmacies. Madonna, which lies in the central part of the streets, has been in the heart of Bolzano for 500 years and provides homespun tinctures and tea blends. The other, Aquila Nera, also has vintage countertops and cabinets.
