Vigadó Concert Hall (Pesti Vigadó)

Vigadó tér 2, Budapest, Hungary, 1051

Located steps from the Danube River in Budapest's opulent District V, the mid-19th-century Vigadó Concert Hall (Pesti Vigadó was restored after suffering damage in World War II, and today stands as a premier Hungarian music venue. The Vigadó—home to the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble—frequently hosts top-notch classical music concerts.

The basics

Translated, the name of this concert hall—Pesti Vigadó—means ""place of merriment,” which makes perfect sense once visitors step inside. The interior of this historic building features marble columns, an ornamental stairway, and frescoes adorning the walls. The panoramic terrace also offers fantastic views.

To see Vigadó's grand interior and main hall, you can prebook tickets and attend a concert, purchase a ""walking ticket,"" or secure a spot on a guided tour. For a small fee, you can explore with a guide and learn more about the building. Since the venue is just a short walk from the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, you can easily add stops at several of Pest's must-see attractions.

Things to know before you go

  • Architecture fans will appreciate the carefully-restored 1859 building.
  • For the best value, purchase a combined ticket, which offers access to all the halls, rooms, and exhibition spaces.
  • Tickets for students and seniors—plus Budapest Card and Hungary Card holders—are offered at a discount.
  • For waterfront views of Vigadó Concert Hall, Buda Castle, and Hungarian Parliament, see more on a Danube cruise.

How to get there

The concert hall is located along the eastern banks of the Danube River, just steps from Elizabeth Square (Erzsébet Tér). The easiest way to reach the concert hall is by metro. You can take the 2 tram line along the Danube, or hop on the M1, M2, or M3 metro lines to Vigadó Tér.

When to get there

The box office and concert hall are open daily. Performances and exhibitions at Vigadó Concert Hall are held often—check the calendar to see what's on. Expect more competition for tickets over the weekend and during the busy summer tourist season, and increased availability during the week.

Visiting the Hungarian State Opera

Beyond Vigadó Concert Hall, Budapest is home to a second venue that's a must-visit for music enthusiasts: the Hungarian State Opera (Magyar Állami Operaház). This grand venue has a three-tiered performance space, an oak-paneled bar, and a frescoed ceiling—among other regal touches. Find events here several times a week, from ballet and classical music to opera. You can explore the Opera House on a daily guided tour, or see a live show.
