POINT OF INTEREST

Vila Franca do Campo

Vila Franca do Campo, São Miguel, Azores

The islet of Vila Franca do Campo is a designated nature reserve formed by an ancient volcanic eruption off the south shore of São Miguel—the largest of Portugal’s Azores islands. Whale-watching cruises voyage in the waters beyond, while swimmers and snorkelers explore the nearly perfect circular lagoon in the islet’s sunken crater.

The Basics

The islet of Vila Franca do Campo (also known as the Princess Ring islet) sits just offshore from a town of the same name—a seaside village and the former capital of São Miguel that’s now known for its churches and convents. It’s a popular departure port for seasonal whale-watching tours, many of which also include a leisure stop on the islet. The lagoon that fills the caldera is almost completely enclosed and sheltered from ocean currents, making its calm, clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

A limited number of ferry tickets are available each day, so line up early during peak season for the best chance of securing a seat. Alternatively, book a guided tour, which is a popular way to bypass the ticket line. Many tours include lunch.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Basic changing facilities and a restroom are available on the islet.

  • A lifeguard station is on the beach, but families and cautious swimmers should be aware that the water is deep in places.

  • No food is available for purchase on the islet, so bring all the food and water you need for the day.

  • Bring water shoes, as the islet beaches are quite rocky.

How to Get There

Reach the islet by boat. Ferries depart every half hour from the marina at Vila Franca do Campo town. Guided boat tours from the port are another popular way to access the islet, while also offering a glimpse of marine life around the Azores.

When to Get There

If planning a day trip to the islet using the public ferry, arrive early in the morning to avoid midday crowds on the beaches. The best swimming weather is from June through October, while peak whale-watching months are April and May.

São Miguel Highlights

The largest and most populated island in the Azores, São Miguel is at the top of most first-time visitors’ lists. Visit the main town of Ponta Delgado to see Azorean colonial architecture, then explore the stunning Lagoa do Fogo and Caldeira das Furnas, natural highlights of the island’s lush volcanic interior. Learn about Azorean agriculture at Terra Nostra botanical gardens and the Gorreana tea plantation—the only one of its kind in Europe.
