Vinciguerra Glacier
Ushuaia, Patagonia
Just a quick drive from Ushuaia, Argentina, Vinciguerra Glacier is a Patagonian pearl that hiking enthusiasts don’t want to miss on their trip to the “end of the world.” Situated in the Martial Mountains, an invigorating hike around the glacier takes you past a brambling stream, lush greenery, and, best of all, the ethereal ice caves.
The basics
The challenging trek, measuring approximately 8 miles (12 kilometers), is best enjoyed by experienced hikers. The hike can take 4–7 hours, depending on your preferred pace. During the excursion, keep your eyes peeled for red foxes, guanacos, beavers, and a variety of other endemic fauna. You can complete the circuit independently or with a guide. Many tours departing from Ushuaia also include a stop at the nearby Tempanos Lagoon and round-trip transportation from your hotel.
Things to know before you go
- Dress warmly and in layers, as the weather can be unpredictable, and temperatures near the glacier can be chilly.
- Wear sturdy hiking boots for traction on uneven terrain.
- Pack sunscreen and sunglasses—the sun's reflection off the ice can be intense.
- Bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated during your outdoor adventure.
How to get there
The Vinciguerra Glacier trailhead is approximately 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the Ushuaia city center. It can be reached by guided tour or private transportation. Most tours provide hotel pickup and drop-off, ensuring convenient access to the glacier. Alternatively, you can arrange for a taxi to reach the starting point of the trek.
When to get there
The best time to visit Vinciguerra Glacier is during the summer (December–March) when temperatures are milder and hiking conditions are optimal. However, tours are available year-round, allowing you to experience the glacier's beauty every season. To avoid crowds, consider scheduling your visit during the shoulder seasons of spring (September–November) or autumn (late March–May).
Kick your feet up and continue the adventure
If your legs need a break after your glacial trek, you can still experience Patagonian nature without overexerting your muscles. Some tours of Tierra del Fuego National Park offer comfortable, all-inclusive transportation, bringing you to natural and cultural attractions including Green Lagoon, Lake Roca, and the End of the World Sign.
