Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain)
Cuzco, Peru, 08225
With impressively straight and colorful lines, Mt. Vinicunca, or “Rainbow Mountain,” as it’s come to be known, explodes with hues of red, ochre, white, and turquoise, caused by minerals in the soil. The Andean peak, resembling a children’s coloring book page, is one of Cusco’s most popular day trips.
The basics
Set high in the Peruvian Andes, the multi-hued wonder requires some effort to get to—but that’s all part of the experience. Guided tours often include an early-morning wake-up and several hours of trekking through the mountains. The air is thin, so walk with a tour group led by emergency-trained guides, who typically carry oxygen. Despite the physical challenges, seeing Vinicunca in person is a visual treat—you might even spot llamas and alpacas along the way.
Things to know before you go
- The mountain sits more than 17,000 feet (5,200 meters) above sea level. Walk at a slow, steady pace as the altitude can take a toll.
- The weather in the Andes changes often and drastically, so dress in layers.
- Wear hiking boots; steep sections of the trail can become slippery if there’s been rain or snow.
- Bring and drink plenty of water—the air at high elevations contains less moisture, so there’s an increased risk of dehydration.
How to get there
By road, it takes about 3.5 hours to get from Cusco to the Rainbow Mountain trailhead. If you don’t have your own vehicle, go with a tour group: Options range from a 1-day trek (with a pre-dawn departure from Cusco) to a 6-day trek on the remote Ausangate Trail.
When to get there
The best season for trekking near Cusco is from April through October when it’s cooler and drier. Because of the high altitude, you should spend a few days in Cusco to acclimate before beginning a trek.
Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain
Since Mt. Vinicunca has gained popularity among travelers, consider visiting the nearby, lesser-visited Palccoyo. The trek is less challenging, and you can see three different rainbow mountains—the first from the parking lot, the second along the trail, and the third at the final destination.
