Virgin Gorda

Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands

Virgin Gorda may not be as well known as other British Virgin Islands, but its natural beauty is worth the off-the-beaten-path adventure. While you’re there, don’t miss the geological wonder known as the Baths, where you can swim and snorkel in grottoes and tide pools.

The Basics

The third-largest of the British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda is a haven for swimmers, divers, and snorkelers. Many visitors head straight for the Baths, a set of rock formations that hide partitions of beach in giant alcoves—but there’s also nearby Devil’s Bay, as well as Spring Bay and the secluded and romantic Little Trunk Bay. When you’ve had enough of the water, relax at one of the island’s many restaurants, bars, and resorts.

For those staying on Saint John or Saint Thomas, full-day boat trips to Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke typically include snorkeling, shopping, and lounging.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • For fewer crowds at the Baths, get there early in the day.

  • Consider wearing water shoes to navigate the slippery rocks around the Baths.

  • A small admission fee is required to enter the Baths.

  • There are restrooms located at the Baths, but not at Devil’s Bay.

How to Get There

It’s a short, fun ferry ride to Virgin Gorda from Tortola. Transportation on Virgin Gorda itself can be a bit costly, as taxis are the main way to get around; many inland hotels and villas also offer car rental options. Direct ferries run between Saint Thomas and Virgin Gorda, but they operate on a limited schedule. Alternatively, book a boat tour from Saint John or Saint Thomas.

When to Get There

The British Virgin Islands are warm year-round, with most tourists visiting in the winter months. The peak time for hurricanes and tropical storms is from early August through the end of October—consider buying travel insurance if you plan to go during that period.

Jost Van Dyke

The smallest of the British Virgin Islands, Jost Van Dyke is popular with boaters and travelers who enjoy a quieter, more secluded island experience. All-day boat tours sometimes combine stops at Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke. Be sure to sample West Indian rotis, conch stew, and flying fish sandwiches, all specialities of the island.
