Warasa Garifuna Drum School
New Road, Punta Gorda, Belize
Garifuna drumming is the backbeat of Belizean life—more than music, it’s a traditional art used for storytelling and celebration. This drum school in Punta Gorda invites visitors for firsthand encounters with that rich culture, which blends African and Indigenous heritage. Founded by a former member of the Belize National Dance Company, the school offers everything from drum-making workshops to lessons in dancing and drumming.
The basics
The Warasa Garifuna Drum School is more of an all-around cultural center, with experiences ranging from hour-long classes to half- and full-day immersions. Though some bookings center around drumming or drum-making alone, others combine Garifuna music like paranda and punta with dancing, traditional meals, and other cultural activities. While tickets don’t usually include transport, the drum school is just a few minutes from town, so it’s easy to reach without your own vehicle.
Things to know before you go
The drum school is family-friendly—kids are warmly welcomed at classes and activities.
This is a great rain-or-shine activity, as classes take place in a covered palapa.
Vegetarian and vegan options are available for bookings with meals or snacks, but it’s a good idea to give notice in advance.
Classes are taught in both English and Spanish.
How to get there
Warasa Garifuna Drum School is located on New Road, roughly 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) from the center of town. While a network of village buses links up surrounding communities, they have limited schedules that can be hard for visitors to navigate. Taxis, however, are plentiful, making this a hassle-free option.
When to get there
While the dry season (November through April) is a popular time to visit for outdoor exploring, Punta Gorda is a year-round destination. Afternoon downpours mean the wetter months between May and October enjoy extra-lush forests and excellent bird-watching—this time of year is a favorite among photographers who enjoy its bright colors and often clear mornings.
