Wat Kalayanamit
371 Soi Arun Amarin 6, Wat Kanlaya, Thon Buri, Bangkok, Thailand, 10600
While Bangkok is full of temples that are worthy of a visitor’s time, few people head over to the Thonburi (west side of the Chao Phraya River, where Wat Kalayanamit is located. The large temple stands out on the skyline and it’s also unusual for having Chinese influences. Travelers who have seen the major sights of Bangkok and are looking for a more off-the-beaten-path experience will enjoy visiting Wat Kalayanamit.
The basics
Wat Kalayanamit was built in the first half of the 19th century, when trade with China was booming and all things Chinese were fashionable in Thailand. This shows in some of Wat Kalayanamit’s architecture and items on display. The temple’s ordination hall is one of the largest in the country and inside sits a 49-foot (15-meter) tall Buddha statue. From the outer areas of the temple you can also look across to the impressive Wichai Prasit Fort, which is now a Thai navy base.
Many travelers simply see the temple on a boat ride on the Chao Phraya River. Some organized tours visit Wat Kalayanamit, especially those with a focus on under-the-radar Bangkok. Cycling, walking, and canal boat tours are also possible in the area.
Things to know before you go
- Entrance is free.
- As at all Thai temples, dress modestly by covering your knees and shoulders.
- The neighborhood around the temple is historically Chinese so it’s an interesting place to wander and see a different side of Bangkok.
How to get there
A ferry from the eastern side of the Chao Phraya River is the best way to Wat Kalayanamit. Many people are content with sailing past and getting a view on a river cruise or ferry up the river, but there is a pier in front of Wat Kalayanamit if you want to get off and explore. Express boats can stop at Wat Kalayanamit on request, or take a ferry from Ratchinee Pier.
When to get there
Wat Kalayanamit is open daily, from early morning until evening. Early morning is the best time to visit as the air is cooler.
Visit Wat Arun
There aren’t very many reasons for travelers to visit the western bank of the Chao Phraya River, but Wat Arun is one. Meaning Temple of Dawn, visitors can climb to the top for impressive views of Bangkok. It is quite different from many other temples in Bangkok, with spires decorated with porcelain shards and glass.
