Wat Thaton
Mae Ai, Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand, 50280
Wat Thaton, a sprawling Buddhist temple complex located in the forested hills near Thailand’s border with Myanmar, sits overlooking the village of Ban Thaton and the Mae Kok River. The complex of pagodas, temples, stupas, and shrines is built on nine levels, offering stunning views over the surrounding countryside.
The Basics
Wat Thaton is divided into nine levels, or “stations,” each with its own stupas and statues of the Buddha. Highlights of the climb to the top include a vipassana meditation center on the fourth level, a richly decorated chedi on the eighth level, and a golden Buddha statue holding out an alms bowl on the ninth level. Guided day trips to Wat Thaton from Chiang Mai typically include visits to a few surrounding hill tribe (ethnic minority) villages and a leisurely boat trip along the Mae Kok River for a chance to see the rural Northern Thai countryside.
Things to Know Before You Go
Wat Thaton is a popular attraction for spiritual travelers and those looking to get off the beaten path.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for a somewhat steep climb to reach the top of the temple complex.
Admission to the temple is free, but donations are accepted.
Give yourself at least two hours to explore the complex.
How to Get There
The journey to Wat Thaton from Chiang Mai takes around three to four hours, and most visitors come as part of a guided day trip to the border region. For those based in Chiang Rai, you can also take a boat upriver; it takes about five hours.
When to Get There
Since you’ll be spending much of your visit outdoors, plan to come to the temple during Northern Thailand’s cool, dry season, typically between November and mid-February. The wettest months are August and September, but rainfall can happen any time of year, so be sure to bring a poncho.
Thaton
While located near the Burmese border, the sleepy outpost of Thaton doesn’t have a legal border crossing, so it’s a quiet spot with very few tourists. The highly picturesque town makes a great jumping-off point for river trips or visits to the surrounding hill tribe villages. The relaxing hot springs of nearby Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park are also worth a visit.
