Woodford Square

In the heart of downtown Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Woodford Square is home to many of the city’s most important buildings, including the Red House and the Holy Trinity Cathedral. It was here that Dr. Eric Williams, the country’s first prime minister, addressed the public at political meetings that led to the nation's eventual independence.
The basics
The Saint Ann's River originally flowed right through the parcel of land where Woodford Square is now, but it was diverted in 1787 so that the land could be used as a military training ground. It was later developed into a public square, with the addition of an ornate 19th-century central fountain, grassy areas, and trees. Today, it’s a popular spot to take a break and—if you’re lucky—listen in on political conversations.

The square is sometimes used for (usually peaceful) protests.

How to get there
Woodford Square is about a 10-minute walk north of the Port of Spain Ferry Terminal in the heart of the city center. Plenty of maxi taxi routes lead right there, and there’s a taxi stand on the southeastern end of the square, at the corner of Frederick and Hart Streets.
When to get there
Woodford Square is open 24 hours a day, but it’s best to come early in the morning when temperatures tend to be cooler, or around sunset. Like elsewhere in Port of Spain (and across the island), the area is at its liveliest during the annual Carnival celebrations, which take place in February or early March.
About the Red House
Located off Woodford Square, the Red House is the seat of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago and one of the most striking structures in the city. This red-hued, Beaux-Arts-style structure was built in 1907, four years after the original building was destroyed during the Water Riots of 1903.
