POINT OF INTEREST

Yulong Bridge

Yanshuo County, Yangshuo, Guanxi

Also known as the Dragon Bridge, the 600-year-old Yulong Bridge stands amid hundreds of tall karst peaks, rural mudbrick villages, rice paddies, and grazing water buffalo. The 197-foot-long (60-meter-long) single-arched bridge—the largest of its kind in Guangxi Province—is shaped like a rainbow bending its way over the languid Yulong River.

The Basics

A visit to Yangshuo wouldn’t be complete without taking to the quiet waters of the Yulong River on a bamboo raft ride, which frequently depart from directly beneath the bridge. The calm, shallow waters near the bridge double as a popular swimming spot, particularly among locals of nearby Baisha Village. If you want to be sure to see this picturesque bridge, consider booking a customizable private tour of the area; boat trips leave from a few different places, but a private tour allows you to specify that you’d like to start at Yulong Bridge.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Yulong Bridge is a popular point of interest for first-time visitors and photographers.

  • Raft rides from the bridge down the Yulong River typically last about three to four hours.

  • Don’t forget to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat.

How to Get There

While the easiest way to reach Yulong Bridge is as part of a guided tour, you can also get there independently by taking a minibus from the Yangshuo Bus Station toward Baisha Village and getting off at Yulong Village. It’s also possible to ride a bicycle along the river from Yangshuo.

When to Get There

The best time to enjoy Yangshuo’s outdoor attractions, such as the Yulong River and Yulong Bridge, is during the shoulder months, from March to ‘mid-May and September to November. Late May and June tend to be rainy, while July and August are hot and humid.

Legend of the Yulong Bridge

Local folklore explains how the bridge got its nickname. A student preparing for an exam in ancient China found himself stuck on the wrong side of the Yulong River on his way to Yangshuo. The boy prayed for a way across so as not to miss his test, promising to build a bridge if he could just make it on time. A dragon appeared and helped the student across, and upon passing his exam, he returned to make good on his promise.
