POINT OF INTEREST

Zoom Torino

Strada Piscina, 36, Cumiana, Piedmont, 10040

Set just outside Turin, this small zoo is an ideal family-friendly break from the bustle of the city. Covering 45 acres, the park is home to 300 animals representing 80 African and Asian species born exclusively in European zoos. With open-air habitats, daily talks, and interactive activities, a visit here is both fun and educational.

The basics

Zoom Torino opened in 2007, and its modern layout and enclosures create an immersive experience where different animals share the same habitat to mimic nature. There are no bars or cages here; instead, natural barriers offer an open environment for the animals and exciting vantage points for visitors to admire hippos, rhinos, lemurs, giraffes, tigers, and more. In addition to the nine land and two aquatic habitats, the zoo offers talks to educate visitors about the animals and their ecosystems, and hands-on activities like feeding the penguins or giraffes, a raptor show, and lemur or turtle petting. From June through September, the zoo has two swimming pools adjacent to the aquatic habitats with underwater windows to observe the neighboring wildlife. As Italy’s first interactive zoo, Zoom Torino is a popular destination for families, so purchase tickets in advance to avoid waiting in line at the entrance.

Things to know before you go

  • Zoom Torino is relatively small and pedestrian-only. Wear comfortable shoes and a hat and sunscreen in summer.
  • Kids especially enjoy visiting this approachable zoo, with its engaging habitats and program of events and activities.
  • The entire park is accessible to wheelchair users.
  • Dining options include a self-service cafeteria, snack bars, a picnic area, and a restaurant.

How to get there

Zoom Torino is located in the town of Cumiana just outside Turin. By car, take the Torino-Pinerolo ring road to the Piscina exit and follow signs towards Cumiana to the park entrance.

When to get there

The park is open daily from March to November, but can be very crowded on summer weekends. Stop by on a weekday to enjoy your visit in relative peace, and during the hottest hours of midday if you plan on taking a dip in the pools.

Swimming at the Zoo

Each summer, visitors to Zoom Turin can cool off at Malawi Beach and Boulder Beach, the park’s two swimming pools located adjacent to the penguin and hippo enclosures. Large glass panels divide the two sides, so swimmers can watch the neighboring wildlife frolic underwater. The zoo even offers snorkeling experiences in the tropical fish habitat and swimming with piranhas.
