In January 1848, near Capt. John Sutter's sawmill on the American River, James Marshall discovered the first yellow flecks of metal that launched the great California gold rush. By the summer more than 2,000 miners were sifting for gold along the river near Sutter's mill, and Coloma, the first of the gold rush towns, was born. Finds grew scarce within a few years, and the once thriving city of 10,000 dwindled to the quiet village it is today.

NATIONAL PARKCalifornia Coastal National Monument Consisting of thousands of islands, rocks, exposed reefs and pinnacles extending up to 12 miles out from the shore off California's entire 1,100-mile coastline, California Coastal National Monument was established to preserve these uninhabited outcroppings.
NATIONAL PARKCrater Lake National Park Crater Lake National Park is on the crest of the Cascade Range, 76 miles east of Medford off I-5 to SR 62; or, from Klamath Falls, take US 97 north 21 miles, then west on SR 62 for 29 miles. The park also can be reached from Roseburg by taking I-5 to SR 138E.

NATIONAL PARKDevils Postpile National Monument Near Mammoth Lakes and surrounded by Inyo National Forest, Devils Postpile National Monument lies at an elevation of 7,560 feet in the eastern Sierra Nevada. The highlight of this 800-acre monument is a sheer wall of symmetrical basaltic columns more than 60 feet high. The formation is a remnant of a basalt flow worn smooth on top by glacial action. A trail leads to the top where the surface resembles a tile inlay.
