Overview
The Temple of Khnum is dedicated to the ancient Egyptian god Khnum, who was the creator of both men and women. In his incarnation as Khnum-Hapi, he revived the springs of the Nile each year to bring about the annual Nile flood. His wife Menhit, the city goddess Nephu, and the goddesses Heka and Neith were also worshipped. The exposed temple lies nine meters below street level in the city of Esna, in a hollowed-out depression. Stairs lead to the temple entrance. The parts of the temple visible today date from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.
