Millburn came into existence via a 1664 land grant by Charles II and was settled in the 1720s. Stewart Hartshorn, inventor of the window shade, acquired more than 1,500 acres in town in 1877 and designed a village called Short Hills. Although it likely cut into sales of his invention, Hartshorn's meandering street plan called for the preservation of as many trees as possible. The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary , 324 Forest Dr. S. in Short Hills, was founded in 1923 by Hartshorn's daughter. The 16.5-acre site offers good bird-watching and has a natural amphitheater; phone (973) 376-3587. Learn More...
