On Lake Champlain, Plattsburgh was the site of the Battle of Plattsburgh on Sept. 11, 1814. While Gen. Alexander Macomb restrained a superior British land force, the Americans, under Cmdr. Thomas Macdonough, scored a decisive naval victory in Plattsburgh Bay. History buffs will enjoy a visit to the War of 1812 Museum , 31 Washington Rd., which displays paintings illustrating the Battle of Plattsburgh and the War of 1812, dioramas of the Battle of Plattsburgh and the 1776 Battle of Valcour, and historical artifacts and memorabilia.
