Rhinelander had its beginning in the 1880s during the days of the pioneer lumber industry. Besides lumber, the area's forests yielded the Hodag, a creature that became the town's beloved mascot. Finally exposed as a hoax composed of wood and ox hides, the Hodag myth is kept alive in local symbols and also can be seen in statue form at the Pioneer Park Historical Complex and the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce.
