About PoteauPoteau, situated on the banks of the Poteau River, is almost entirely surrounded by mountains. The Winding Stair and Kiamichi mountains are on the southwest horizon, while the Poteau Range dominates the view to the south. Cavanal, said to be the world's highest hill, provides a splendid view of Sugar Loaf Mountain.
The town is an outfitting center for recreation in nearby Ouachita National Forest. A scenic stretch of US 59/270 extends 25 miles south to the US 259 intersection before the town of Page.
