10 Free and Cheap Things to do in Houston

Houston getaways are exciting and action-packed; however, they can also be pricey. From museum admission to souvenirs to mouthwatering barbecue, it can be easy to overspend. Finding deals on accommodations can help, but often the most impressive savings are achieved when exploring the best free attractions in Houston. These don't always attract as much attention as Houston's more iconic destinations, but they’re still worth visiting — and not merely because they reduce the overall cost of traveling.

By taking a break from the 'typical' attractions and exploring Houston's unique parks and neighborhoods, you can get a better sense of the city's vibrant atmosphere. Below, we've highlighted 10 free and cheap things to do in Houston, as well as how you can build these into your budget-friendly vacation.

1. Memorial Park

  • Address: 6501 Memorial Drive, Houston
  • Price: Free

As the largest urban green space in all of Houston, Memorial Park promises a memorable outdoor experience, complete with hiking, biking, volleyball, and so much more. Strolling together can be lovely for couples, but the accessible Vale-Asche Foundation Playground is a must when visiting with kids.

Pack a picnic so you can enjoy a scenic lunch — or stop by one of many food trucks that gather near the playground and the tennis center. For a brief escape from the urban hustle and bustle, check out the Eastern Glades area, where you'll discover beautiful flowers and can watch the ducks while you explore the scenery.

2. Discovery Green

  • Address: 1500 McKinney Street, Houston
  • Price: Free to visit, but ice-skating costs $18

Another beloved urban park, Discovery Green is appealing not only because it's so beautiful, but also, because it's conveniently located near the downtown district. There is always something going on in this vibrant community space, which regularly hosts concerts and yoga classes.

The Discovery Green splash pad provides the perfect chance to get cool during the humid summer months, but the Discovery Green remains just as appealing when winter weather takes over: it's home to Houston's only outdoor skating rink.

3. Japanese Garden in Hermann Park

  • Address: 6000 Fannin Street, Houston
  • Price: Free

Hermann Park attractions tend to be expensive; this is where Houston's most iconic museums can be found, along with the beloved Houston Zoo. If you'd like to explore the park while sticking to a strict budget, however, you are in luck: despite its many paid attractions, this vast park is packed with more affordable things to do.

Among the most compelling? The Japanese Garden, which offers a true oasis in the heart of Houston. Designed by the talented landscape architect Ken Nakajima, the Japanese Garden is packed with gorgeous cherry trees, azaleas, myrtles, and more. Wander at your own pace; you'll quickly stumble upon beautiful waterfalls and bridges, along with a lovely tea house.

4. McGovern Centennial Gardens

  • Address: 1500 Hermann Drive, Houston
  • Price: Free

Another Hermann Park must-visit, the McGovern Centennial Gardens span eight acres and include many delightful, themed areas. A multi-sensory experience awaits within the Family Garden, which showcases fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Kids also enjoy the Pergola Walk and the Hawkins Sculpture Walk. For a wonderfully romantic experience, stroll among the formal rose beds and gaze at the garden's many antique roses. In the summer, the Woodland Garden is appreciated for its ample shade.

5. Julia Ideson Library

  • Address: 550 McKinney Street, Houston
  • Price: Free

In many cities, local libraries are among the most underrated destinations, showcasing unique architecture while also offering plenty of entertainment that goes beyond the expected books or magazines to include exhibits, lectures, and even children's play areas. Houston is no exception, and, while many excellent libraries promise a relaxing break (and much-appreciated air conditioning), there's something truly special about the Julia Ideson Library.

Named for a passionate resident who served as head librarian for several decades, this Spanish Renaissance structure is beautiful to behold. The sense of awe continues as you head inside, where you'll find many visually compelling works of art. This is one of Houston's more peaceful libraries, although, if you're visiting with kids, you may prefer the whimsical spaces within the Vinson Neighborhood Library.

6. Houston Arboretum and Nature Center

  • Address: 4501 Woodway Drive, Houston,
  • Price: Free

A top destination among local birding enthusiasts, the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center brings the wonders of the great outdoors to the heart of the city. This beloved arboretum is home to many short, but stunning trails, along with intriguing exhibits and hands-on activities within the Discovery Room.

A sizable Nature Playscape encourages little ones to connect with the natural world as they use their imagination and make new friends. Keep an eye out for field stations as you embark on a Habitat Hike, which can be further enhanced by a customized ROCO on the Go playlist.

7. The Menil Collection

  • Address: 1533 Sul Ross Street, Houston
  • Price: Free

Houston's museums are amazing, but steep admission may make some visitors think twice before spending the day exploring natural history or fine art. Thankfully, an excellent alternative is available: the Menil Collection.

Housing the vast and visually compelling collection of the inspiring John and Dominique de Menil, this museum promises a thought-provoking and decidedly serene experience. Meander among the five structures and the vast outdoor space, as well as see the museum's sizable Surrealist collection.

8. Houston Police Museum

  • Address: 1200 Travis Street, Houston
  • Price: Free

Tiny, but free to visit, the Houston Police Museum is worth a stop if you are hanging out downtown and need something to do while you wait for your dinner reservation. Housed within the police department headquarters, the museum includes fascinating SWAT and mounted police artifacts, along with various uniforms and equipment. Tours are self-guided, but there is plenty of information available.

9. Sam Houston Boat Tour

  • Address: 7300 Clinton Drive, Gate 8, Houston
  • Price: Free

In most cities, it can cost quite a bit to explore by boat. This is not the case in Houston however, where one of the most spectacular tours can be enjoyed free of charge. During this unique tour, you'll learn all about the history of the ship channel — and you'll encounter some excellent bird-watching opportunities along the way. You can even enjoy a cup of coffee, which, like the tour itself, is free of charge. Keep in mind that reservations are required and that spots can often fill up well in advance.

10. Orange Show

  • Address: 2401 Munger Street, Houston
  • Price: Free to explore, but classes and workshops typically cost $20+

Celebrating the odd and outlandish, Houston's Orange Show feels a bit like a playground but also functions as a wacky homage to the sweet flavor of the juiciest oranges. Many special events and classes are hosted here, including live music, yoga, and even Brazilian martial arts. Simply wandering by and snapping a picture can be delightful, however. Other photo-worthy highlights include the Beer Can House and the intricate (and whimsical) Smither Park.
