At one time, Arizona was part of the Wild West — a dangerous, inhospitable territory on the American frontier. So-called pioneers and spectators flocked here in the 1800s to find a better life. They became gold miners, cowboys or even outlaws, and the newcomers built pioneer towns — many of which are still standing today. As you can imagine, the Wild West wasn’t exactly a kid-friendly place.

With its wild pioneer past behind it, today’s Arizona is a booming, winter-sun tourism destination that beckons families to visit. Phoenix, the state’s capital, in particular is the perfect place for your next kid-friendly vacation.

1. Phoenix Zoo

The Phoenix Zoo is one of the best things to do in Phoenix with kids. Various habitats allow you to get close with exotic animals and make new friends like meerkats and flamingos. Accordingly, it offers a full day of exploration and family fun.

This is no rinky-dink backyard zoo. The Phoenix attraction received its most recent five-year accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums after an evaluation by the association's independent Accreditation Commission, signifying the zoo is noteworthy for both animal welfare and wildlife conservation.

Visit another planet without leaving Phoenix! The Hole in the Rock Hiking Area, located in Papago Park, is a massive rock formation that looks like it belongs on Mars. Kids and families can hike in, on, and around this rocky area. This spot makes for a great photo op too!

5. Arizona Falls

Most people don’t think of Phoenix at the mention of the word "waterfall." The arid, sun-scorched landscape of Arizona means there isn’t much water in general, let alone waterfalls. But just to the east of Phoenix you’ll find one — albeit a man made one — the Arizona Falls!

The falls are formed where a 20-foot drop in the Arizona Canal occurs around 56th Street in Phoenix. In the early 20th century, the site was converted into an electric power plant that later fell into disrepair. Now it's a public art site and a great spot to take your family on an outing.

6. Pueblo Grande Museum Archaeological Park

You and your kids can learn about the native peoples of Arizona by visiting the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park. Here you’ll find a wealth of information about the native Hohokam tribe. Located near downtown Phoenix, it features actual archaeological sites from the ancient Hohokam civilization as well as exhibits housed in a modern building. Explore ancient artifacts from thousands of years ago and learn about the legacy these people left behind on the land. 7. Mesa Grande Cultural Park

The Mesa Grande Cultural Park is an amazing historic attraction to visit and one of the best things to do in Phoenix with kids. Educator-guided field trips offer a fascinating glimpse into the ancient culture of Mesa and the Salt River. Children ages three to twelve enter for only $2, while small children up to age two enter for free.

8. White Tank Mountain Regional Park

Take your kids on a hike in the desert! White Tank Mountain Regional Park is an outdoor haven outside of Phoenix, boasting 30,000 acres of stunning scenery created by ancient and beautiful rock formations. With more than 25 miles of trails for all levels of experience, it’s the perfect spot for a fun day-hike or more serious backpacking adventure. One of the best attractions at White Tank is the aptly named Elephant Rock — a massive rock formation that looks just like an elephant!

For those with smaller children looking for a less strenuous outing, there are plenty of opportunities to observe the desert landscapes from the comfort of your car as well.
