11 Essential Things to Do in Orlando

Updated: May 14, 2025

Written byAAA Travel Editor, SMS

While Orlando is probably most famous for its theme parks, there’s so much more to the sunny city in Central Florida. Whether you’re traveling with kids, planning a romantic getaway with that special someone or flying solo, there are so many things to do in Orlando that you’ll probably start planning a return trip before you even get back home. From natural beauty to space exploration, cultural gems to thrilling rides, Orlando is a city built with every kind of traveler in mind.

And if you’re wondering about things to do in Orlando besides theme parks, we’ve got you covered. But if you’re here to experience that theme park magic with your family, we’ll cover that, too! It’s your vacation and you should spend it making memories you’ll cherish forever. Let’s dive into 11 things you’ll want to experience on your Orlando adventure.

1. Go Wild on a Drive-Thru Safari

  • Address: 3301 Lake Cypress Road, Kenansville, FL 34739
  • Time needed: 2-3 hours

For one of the most unforgettable Orlando attractions that combines the fun of a theme park with the adventure of the wilderness, head to the Wild Florida Drive-Thru Safari. You get to drive through an 85-acre wildlife park to see more than 150 exotic and native animals, including alligators, zebras, bison and even giraffes. Some of them may even walk right up to your vehicle!

The safari is perfect for families or anyone looking to see animals up close and without having to deal with crowds and it’s a fantastic year-round activity. While it’s cool to see these animals up close, follow all guidelines to keep your family (and the animals) safe.

2. Reach for the Stars at Kennedy Space Center

  • Address: Space Commerce Way, Merritt Island, FL 32953
  • Time needed: 5-6 hours

Explore where history meets the future at Kennedy Space Center, about an hour from Orlando. Tour NASA launch sites, stand beneath massive rockets and walk through exhibits that celebrate America’s space achievements. You might even meet an astronaut while you’re there!

The Kennedy Space Center is a must-visit for science buffs and families alike. Kids can experience what it’s like to go on a space mission with the Shuttle Launch Experience and have fun in the multi-story Planet Play area, which features interactive elements in a space-themed playground.

3. Discover Floridian Magic at Disney World

  • Address: Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando, FL 32830
  • Time needed: A day at each park

No list of things to do in Orlando with kids would be complete without a visit to Walt Disney World. Whether you’re visiting Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom, each park offers its own world of wonder. Use the Park Hopper pass to access multiple parks in one day or buy a multi-day pass to save money and experience the parks at your own pace.

If you want to know when to visit Disney World, it’s a good idea to go on a weekday during the school year. Visiting during shoulder seasons will mean small crowds. Make sure to reserve your park days early and use the Disney app to reserve spots on rides to minimize wait times, order food and check on times for parades and other events.

4. Paddle Alongside Manatees

  • Address: 5656 E Silver Springs Blvd, Silver Springs, FL 34488
  • Time needed: 2-3 hours

Few experiences compare to kayaking through crystal-clear waters alongside gentle manatees. Clear kayak tours in Crystal River, just over an hour and a half from Orlando, offer a rare chance to see these marine mammals up close. Kayaking is also an eco-friendly thing to do in Orlando, as you interact with these beautiful animals.

These tours are kid-friendly for ages 3 and up. Visit in the winter months (November through March) when manatees seek the warm spring waters.

5. Dip Your Toes in at Clearwater Beach

  • Address: Clearwater Beach, FL 33767
  • Time needed: A half or full day

As one of the best beaches near Orlando, Clearwater Beach is known for its soft white sand and vibrant waterfront scene. It’s about a two-hour drive from Orlando and makes a great day trip for sunbathing, swimming or dolphin-watching.

Weekdays at Clearwater Beach are less crowded than weekends and holidays, but it is a popular beach, so you’ll want to get there early to stake out a spot for sunbathing. Bring sunscreen, snacks and cash for parking.

6. Meet Your Heroes at Universal

  • Address: 6000 Universal Blvd, Orlando, FL 32819
  • Time needed: A day or more

Universal Orlando Resort features four action-packed parks: Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Volcano Bay and Epic Universe. From the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Minion Mayhem and Super Mario World, there’s something for every age.

Mid-week visits during the off-season (September through early December) can mean shorter lines and more comfortable temperatures. After you and your family have fun at the parks, check out Universal CityWalk for food and shopping.

7. Take It to New Heights in a Helicopter

  • Address: 4010 4th St, Kissimmee, FL 34741
  • Time needed: 20-30 minutes

Get a whole new perspective of the greater Orlando area with a private helicopter tour over Orlando’s top sights. These tours fly over famous attractions like Disney World, Universal Studios and some of the nearby lakes. You and your entire family will have plenty of breathtaking views and photo opportunities.

Helicopter tours are best on clear days, so check weather conditions before buying your tickets. To make sure your trip is as fun as possible, ensure your family dresses comfortably, eats a light meal before you all fly and stays hydrated.

8. Score Slam Dunk Orlando Magic Tickets

  • Address: 400 W Church St, Orlando, FL 32801
  • Time needed: 2-3 hours

If you’re traveling alone or with friends or a family of basketball lovers, get tickets to an Orlando Magic game at the Kia Center for some exciting NBA action. It’s one of the most fun things to do in Orlando, Florida, for sports lovers and families who love experiencing the fun of a live event.

Basketball season runs from October through April and getting tickets for weekday games is easier. If you want to see a game between the Magic and another popular team, buy your tickets as far in advance as you can.

9. Explore the Everglades in an Airboat

  • Address: 3301 Lake Cypress Rd, Kenansville, FL 34739
  • Time needed: 1-2 hours

Glide across marshlands and spot gators, birds and more wildlife on an Everglades airboat tour. Located about an hour outside of Orlando, this classic Florida adventure combines adrenaline and nature in one thrilling ride. But getting outside of the city opens up plenty of opportunities to see scenic areas that give you a chance to take a breather from the city.

Tours run year-round, but early spring offers cooler temps and more wildlife sightings. The airboat moves quickly and can be loud, so if you or your kids are sensitive to noise and speed, you should skip this attraction.

10. Build New Memories at LEGOLAND Florida

  • Address: 1 Legoland Way, Winter Haven, FL 33884
  • Time needed: Full day

LEGOLAND Florida is a dream for kids from ages 2–12 (and adults who still love the fun challenge of creating with Lego bricks), with themed rides, interactive exhibits and a water park. Located about 45 minutes from Orlando, it’s perfect for families looking for something less intense than the other major theme parks and Orlando attractions.

Bring swimsuits for the water park and check for package deals to save money on tickets. Check the calendar for the latest events like LEGO festivals and the opening of the new aquarium.

11. Immerse Yourself in Culture at the Orlando Museum of Art

  • Address: 2416 N Mills Ave, Orlando, FL 32803
  • Time needed: At least 1-2 hours

If you’re seeking a quiet, enriching cultural experience, the Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) delivers. The museum features a range of exhibitions, from contemporary works to ancient artifacts and regularly hosts events and lectures.

A stroll through the museum is great for adults or older kids, especially on hot or rainy afternoons. The museum’s permanent collections include incredible 19th, 20th and Contemporary American art and a collection of African and Ancient American art.
