Atlanta is a beautiful destination year-round. From sunny, blue-sky springs with gorgeous flower blossoms to stunning fall foliage, Atlanta offers temperature weather, fun activities, world-class dining and attractions. Plus, as an international air travel hub for Delta and AirTran Airways, Atlanta offers lots of affordable, flexible flight options.

Whether you’re day-tripping to the Blue Ridge Mountains, browsing the affluent shopping areas of Buckhead or exploring the bustling streets of the Peachtree District, Atlanta is the perfect spot for a vacation any time of the year.

Atlanta in the Summer

Weather

Located in the heart of the South, Atlanta has humid, hot summers. Expect thunderstorms that come and go quickly with average temperatures that hover in the 80s for most of the day. However, it’s more moderate than the subtropical climate of other Southern states and a more moderate summer means it’s easier to spend time outdoors and soak up the sun. Just wear lots of sunscreen!

Flight Pricing

The high season for Atlanta includes May and June, so airline prices will be at their peak during these months. Demand does drop off as the temperatures increase, however, so July and August are busy yet not the most expensive. Plus, with the increase in demand for travel since the quarantines and lockdowns of 2020, airline prices are up 16% overall, making the average flight more expensive than it was a few years ago. Luckily, booking flights through your AAA travel agent with your membership saves you money!

Activities

There is so much to do both indoors and outdoors in Atlanta during the summer and the Atlanta CityPASS gives you a major discount on the top attractions in the area like the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca-Cola. If you want to spend time outside, cooling off in the Chattahoochee River is a popular option with tubing and floating excursions as popular activities. A two-hour tube ride in the chilly water is just what you need after hot days of walking around the city.

The Zoo Atlanta is also a fun activity for the whole family with many of the animals loving the warmer weather, too. Plus, Atlanta is known for its vibrant music and cultural scene, so enjoy a festival like the Shaky Knees Music Festival with fun alternative bands or the Piedmont Park Arts Festival. These outdoor parks are some of the best ways to visit Atlanta on a budget as well.

Nothing says “summer” quite like a theme park, so enjoying a thrill-seeking day at Six Flags Atlanta is a popular activity as well. Your AAA membership gets you the best discounts and rates on attraction tickets, so talk to your AAA travel agent about what you want to do in the summer in Atlanta.
