21_21 Design Sight
9 Chome−7−6 Akasaka, Minato, Tokyo, Kanto, 107-0052
Created by architect Ando Tadao and fashion designer Issey Miyake, this museum focuses on looking toward the future, with a name inspired by the term "20/20 vision." Here you'll find special exhibitions spread across two galleries. Past shows have covered everything from wristwatches to French design.
The basics
Since it opened to the public in 2007, the museum has been hosting all sorts of installations, talks, and workshops focused on visual design. The building merits a visit for its architecture alone, with glass windows and sloping roofs that meet at a triangular point, making them look like the flap of an envelope. Exhibitions change regularly, so it’s wise to check the museum’s website to see what’s on before your visit.
Things to know before you go
21_21 Design Sight is a must-visit for fans of design and innovation.
Food, drink, and the use of pens are prohibited inside the space.
There are no storage lockers at the museum, but you can leave bags at the front desk.
How to get there
The best way to get to 21_21 Design Sight is by using public transportation, as there's no on-site parking available. The museum is set in the Tokyo Midtown complex, about a 5-minute walk from Roppongi Station (on the Toei Oedo and Tokyo Metro Hibiya Lines) and from Nogizaka Station (on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line).
When to get there
The museum is open every day of the week except for Tuesdays, and is closed when work is being installed and during the New Year's holidays. It stays open late during the annual Roppongi Art Night in the springtime. Check the website for details about special events and exhibitions.
Tokyo Midtown
21_21 Design Sight is located in the Tokyo Midtown area, a massive complex designed to be a "city within a city." Other occupants of the building include the Ritz Carlton (on the top floors), the Suntory Museum of Art, Fujifilm Square (which, unsurprisingly, hosts photography exhibitions), and the Tokyo Midtown Design Hub.
