POINT OF INTEREST

A Brasileira

120-122 R. Garrett, Lisbon, Portugal, 1200-205

Dating back to 1905, A Brasileira is one of Lisbon's oldest cafés and a much-loved spot for a pastéis de nata (egg custard tart pastries). Located in the city’s Chiado neighborhood, the eatery has a Parisian feel, with art deco elements including mosaic floors and sculpted wood decorations. Stop by for a bica—the Lisbon word for a shot of espresso, which is said to originate from this café.

The basics

The vibrant and historic neighborhood of Chiado is a favorite for food tours that showcase local specialties, such as bacalhau (salted cod), pesticos (Portuguese tapas), and pastéis de nata. Some tours include a stop at A Brasileira to take in the ambiance and enjoy the culture that was popular with intellectuals and artists of years past, and now remains as vibrant as ever. Stop and pose for a photo with the bronze statue of Fernando Pessoa, a Portuguese poet who often frequented the café.

Things to know before you go

  • A Brasileira is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

  • You may have to wait your turn to take a picture with the statue of Fernando Pessoa, as it is a popular Lisbon photo opportunity.

  • It is often much faster to grab a seat outside, rather than wait for an indoor table.

How to get there

A Brasileira is located in the Chiado neighborhood, right across from the Baixa-Chiado metro stop, which is served by the Blue and Green Lines. There are bus and tram stops just a block away, or you can easily walk to the café from other tourist spots, such as the Church of St. Dominic (Igreja de São Domingos) and the Santa Justa Lift (Elevador de Santa Justa).

When to get there

A Brasileira is open from 8am to 12pm daily, though you'll often find a line for tables during lunch hours. Consider going early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the rush, or opt for outdoor seating that often has less waiting time.

Popular cafés in Lisbon

Lisbon has a vibrant coffee culture, and there are plenty of options to try if you want to explore beyond A Brasileira. The plant-filled café Hello, Kristof might be tiny, but it's big on atmosphere. Snag a table by the open windows at Comoba and enjoy a matcha with house-made almond, coconut, or rice milk. If you need a co-working space that's designed to inspire, Village Underground is the spot.
