Aarhus Cathedral (Aarhus Domkirke)

Store Torv, Aarhus, Denmark, 8000

The handsome 12th-century Aarhus Cathedral (Aarhus Domkirke) is a showstopper, towering above the town with its soaring spires that pierce the sky. Architecture buffs will appreciate this landmark church’s mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles, and the 15th-century altarpiece, baptismal font, and frescoes never fail to impress. Visit as part of a city tour or catch one of the frequently scheduled concerts here.

The basics

The spires of the Aarhus Cathedral can be seen from across the city, and this historic church is the focal point of city walking tours and self-guided audio tours. Admire its red-brick exteriors, which mix architectural styles of the 12th and 15th centuries, then stop inside to take in the church's many treasures. The cathedral is also home to an impressive 18th-century organ—the largest in Denmark—and often holds concerts featuring the organ and other instruments.

How to get there

Aarhus Cathedral is located in the historic center of Aarhus, and the top city attractions are all a short walk away. Jutland‘s central transport hub, Aarhus, has an airport, ferry port, train station, and bus terminal. To get around within the city, use Aarhus’ robust bus system.

When to get there

The church is open from 9:30a.m. to 4p.m. in summer and from 10a.m. to 3p.m. in winter. However, it is closed to tourists on Sundays and Wednesdays from 12p.m. to 12:20p.m., when religious services are held. You can also attend a concert at the cathedral to listen to its historic organ.

The Aarhus Cathedral organ

The cathedral in Aarhus is home to Denmark’s largest organ, a soaring instrument originally built in 1730. Over the next two centuries, the instrument was rebuilt several times to increase its stops and clarify its sound. The current version, with 89 stops and a pedal keyboard, is the crown jewel of the cathedral. A second organ was added to the church in 1970, and today, both are used for live concerts and religious services.
